Important Downloadable Book Update
The state's contract with Overdrive has ended and downloadable ebooks and audiobooks are transitioning to new providers.
Kansas EZ Library will replace Overdrive. Kansas EZ Library will consist of two, separate services. Audiobooks will provided through OneClick Digital and ebooks will be provided through 3M Cloud.
Downloadable audiobooks are available now! Please keep in mind that the collection is limited at this time but will continue to grow. In addition, the state of Kansas is one of the first to use OneClick, which is still in a "Beta" or test mode. We are working with OneClick to fix any errors that may exist.
UPDATE 1/18/12: Ebooks are now available for through mobile device apps. Currently, you are able to access ebooks straight from your mobile device only. Apps currently work with iPad/iPhone/iPad Touch, Android Smartphones and Android tablets. Nook tablets and Nook Colors are not able to access the apps yet, as their app stores are more limited than that of other devices.
Full access through the computer is coming soon, hopefully by the end of January. Once full access is established you will have the option to download a title to your computer and then transfer it to your device instead of going through an app.
FAQs
Why did Kansas end its contract with Overdrive?
We were able to provide Overdrive to Johnson County and Olathe residents through a contract that the state of Kansas library had established. When it came time to renew, Overdrive wanted to impose a 700% increase over the next three- years. In addition, all content that the library had purchased under the previous six-year contract would be considered leased to the library and not owned, as the original contract stipulated. Under these new terms, the state library would not be able to continue purchasing enough new downloadable content to keep up with demand.
What happened to my holds on Overdrive?
Unfortunately, your holds and wish lists will not transfer. However, many of the books on the current site will remain available for checkout. You will need to search for the title again and replace your holds. Please be aware that the new services will not have the exact same content. The state library has been working with publishers to move our previous content. Some have granted permission but some have not.
What devices will be compatible with the new services?
Audiobooks: All current devices which have been in long-term use should work with the new services. However, Kindle compatibility with library lending is very new. 3M Cloud Library is in talks with Amazon to provide Kindle compatibility, but this is not expected to be ready by January 2012. We will let you know as we have more information.
eBooks: Apple devices (iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch), Android-based tablets and ebook readers (this includes the Nook), Sony eReaders, and many more not specifically listed will be compatible. Please note: The only way to access ebooks at this time is through an app. Apps currently work with iPad/iPhone/iPad Touch, Android Smartphones and Android tablets. Nook tablets and Nook Colors are not able to access the apps yet, as their app stores are more limited than that of other devices.
Kindle compatibility will not be ready at the start of the new service, but they are working on it. Please realize that 3M Cloud Library is a brand new product, and that Amazon only released their library lending program in late September. It takes time to incorporate new options.

How can I access ebooks?
Right now you can only access ebooks through an app on your mobile device and you will need a Kansas Library Card. 3M is finalizing the software necessary for transferring a download to a device from a computer. Computer access should be available by the end of January. Nook and Sony eReader users will need to wait to access ebooks until this time. We have asked 3M to look into placing their app in more app stores so that Nook and Sony eReader users can have the convenience of an app as well.
Kansas library cards can be obtained in-person at any Olathe or Johnson County library. These cards are separate from your normal Olathe or Johnson County Library card. They are free, available to all Kansas residents and have no age requirements. Bring your driver's license with current Kansas address or another document to verify your address. We are hopeful that your current Olathe/Johnson County Library card will be compatible with the ebook system soon.
I'm confused. What is an app?
App is short for application. Recently “app” has been used to describe a piece of software that can be added to a smartphone or tablet in order to perform a certain function. You can download a lot of apps to a device--games, calendars, calculators, weather trackers, etc. The 3M Cloud Library app will allow the Smartphones and tablets to interface directly with our ebooks (without using a computer) so patrons may checkout, download, and read books.
When the ebooks are ready to be accessed via computer, you will be able to access them from the same page that you accessed Overdrive, Downloadable Books.
